Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, declared on Friday night that it will assume the role of the opposition in both the Centre and the Punjab province as efforts to establish the next government in the country persist. The announcement came from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s barrister, Ali Saif, a day after the party had designated Umar Ayub Khan as its candidate for the prime minister and Aslam Iqbal as the chief minister for Punjab.

Saif informed the media that the decision to sit in the opposition was made following the guidance of the party’s founder, Imran Khan, who is currently in jail. Despite acknowledging that they might have secured seats in the Centre with 180 seats based on their votes and the unchanged results, the party chose to take the opposition stance. Saif mentioned, “We decided to sit in opposition despite the reality that if we received seats according to our votes and the results were not changed then maybe today we might have been in the Centre with 180 seats. We have the evidence that our candidates won,” as quoted by the news agency PTI.

Imran Khan’s party calls for nationwide protest

Earlier today, the Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf declared nationwide protests in response to what they describe as “unprecedented, massive, and brazen rigging” in the recent elections across the country.

The party contends that despite securing “180 National Assembly seats & a two-thirds majority in Parliament,” their success was allegedly curtailed to half by what they term an “illegitimate, fascist regime.”

Raoof Hasan, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Information Secretary, stated in a press conference that 2024 would be remembered for the “biggest voter fraud” in Pakistan’s history against their party and its candidates. He claimed, “According to our estimates, out of 177 [National Assembly] seats which were supposed to be ours, only 92 have been given to us. And 85 seats have been taken away from us fraudulently,” as reported by PTI.

Hasan emphasized a significant disparity in the number of votes cast for National Assembly and provincial assembly seats. He also highlighted instances where the count of rejected votes exceeded the margin of victory.

Shandana Gulzar, another party leader, alleged that candidates supported by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf secured 1.25 million votes in Karachi but inexplicably failed to win a single seat.

In a related development, Pakistan’s Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a petition on Monday filed by a citizen seeking to declare the recently held general elections null and void, as reported by The Express Tribune.
