Sreejesh’s outstanding performance secures an exciting victory for the Indian men’s hockey team against Spain in the FIH Pro League.
PR Sreejesh’s remarkable goalkeeping skills played a pivotal role in India securing a thrilling 8-7 shootout victory against Spain in the FIH Hockey Pro League 2023-24, held at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium. In the shootout, Sreejesh made a crucial save, while Harmanpreet Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, Lalit Upadhyay, Abhishek, and Raj Kumar Pal successfully converted their chances, earning India a bonus point.
During regulation time, Jarmanpreet Singh (1′) and Abhishek (35′) scored for India, while Jose Basterra (3′) and Borja Lacalle (15′) found the net for Spain. The match began with Jarmanpreet Singh’s early field goal, but Spain responded strongly, equalizing through Basterra. Lacalle then gave Spain the lead just before the end of the first quarter.

Despite India’s constant attacking efforts, Spain held a 2-1 lead at halftime. The third quarter saw intense hockey from both sides, with Abhishek’s quick response to a penalty corner leveling the score at 2-2 by the end of the quarter.
In the final quarter, India intensified their offensive, earning a penalty corner with six minutes left. However, Spain’s goalkeeper blocked Amit Rohidas’ shot. Sreejesh’s outstanding saves in the dying minutes prevented Spain from taking the lead, ultimately leading to a 2-2 scoreline at the end of regulation time.
The Indian team’s next challenge is against The Netherlands in their upcoming match on Wednesday, 21st February.
