BCCI awards 2023 Gill

The BCCI awards 2023 will be held for the first time since 2019 and both India and England teams are expected to be in attendance ahead of the first Test beginning here on Thursday

BCCI Awards 2023: Former India all-rounder and head coach Ravi Shastri is set to receive the BCCI’s Lifetime Achievement Award on Tuesday. Additionally, Shubman Gill will be honored with the Cricketer of the Year award for his outstanding achievements over the past 12 months, including becoming the fastest to reach the 2000-run milestone in ODIs and scoring five centuries in the format.

A BCCI official announced, “He (Shastri) has been chosen for the honour, while Gill will be awarded the Cricketer of the Year.”

The BCCI awards ceremony, the first since 2019, will take place with both the India and England teams expected to be present ahead of the first Test scheduled to begin on Thursday.

Shastri, 61, represented India in 80 Tests and 150 ODIs. After retiring from playing, he gained recognition in the broadcasting world. Shastri also served as the head coach for the Indian national team, first as a team director from 2014 to 2016 and later as head coach alongside captain Virat Kohli until the T20 World Cup in 2021.

During his coaching tenure, India achieved a historic back-to-back Test series win in Australia. However, the team fell short of winning an ICC title during Shastri and Kohli’s leadership. India reached the WTC final during Shastri’s tenure but faced defeat against New Zealand. In the 2019 ODI World Cup, India reached the semifinals.

Reflecting on his time with the team, Shastri, during his farewell event in the UAE in 2021, expressed pride in the team’s performances. He remarked, “The quality of cricket this team has played over the last five years across all formats, the performances are there for everyone to see. When you perform in that fashion, when you go across the globe, across all formats and beat teams, then you know you’re part of one great cricket team.”
