The US Embassy and Consulates in India processed over 1.4 million visas, with visitor visas making up the highest number at 700,000

In 2023, the US Embassy achieves a historic milestone by granting over 140,000 student visas to Indian students, marking a third consecutive record-breaking year. The latest data, released by the United States Embassy and Consulates in India, underscores the growing preference of Indian students for international education in the US. Indian students now constitute the largest group of international graduate students in the United States, representing over a quarter of the one million-plus foreign students enrolled in the country.

Amidst the rising demand for international education among Indian students, the United States remains a top choice, competing with other popular destinations such as Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Notably, the US issued the highest number of student visas to Indian students in 2023 compared to any other country. According to the US Embassy, Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, and Chennai stand as the top four “student visa processing posts in the world.”

The statement from the US Embassy in India highlights, “Indian students have become the largest group of international graduate students in the United States and make up more than a quarter of the over one million foreign students studying in the United States.”

Visitor visas (B1/B2) have also witnessed a significant surge, representing the second-highest number of applications in the history of the US Mission, totaling over 700,000.

In addition to student visas, the US Embassy processed a remarkable 1.4 million visas in India during 2023, indicating a 60% increase in visa applications compared to the previous year. Indians constitute one out of every 10 US visa applicants worldwide.

Responding to the surging demand, the US Embassy has taken proactive measures to enhance the visa application process. The embassy’s initiatives include a notable reduction in appointment wait times, achieved through increased staffing to address the “unprecedented” visa demand in India. The average wait time for visitor visas has been slashed by 75%, from an average of 1,000 days to only 250 days nationwide.

Moreover, to further streamline the process, the US Mission inaugurated a new state-of-the-art facility in Hyderabad last March, representing an investment of $340 million. Additionally, plans were announced for the opening of two new consulates in Ahmedabad and Bangalore, reinforcing the commitment to efficiently serve the visa needs of Indian applicants.
